A 1989 wine a collectible ? Yes, it can.... We tasted several times Haut Brion 1989 vs. Mission Haut Brion 1989. Both 100 points wines. And both same quality, if you ask who's the winner, 50 % will choose the HB and 50 % the LMHB. And the difference ? The Haut Brion is prices at 1200 euro and the LMHB at 799 euro. So this one will increase in price, a genuine collectible.
This is a profound bottle of La Mission-Haut-Brion with a deep ruby/purple color and a gorgeous nose of espresso, tar, tobacco, mineral, and blackberry, blueberry, and black currant fruit. The extraordinary smorgasbord of aromatics is matched by a full-bodied, viscous, opulent style of wine with sweet, jammy fruit yet enough tannin and acidity to provide uplift and definition. Still somewhat of an adolescent in terms of its development, and far less evolved than its gorgeous sibling, the 1990, this is a prodigious, multi-dimensional wine that is a modern-day legend.
Winespectator / James Suckling (96)
What a nose of pressed flowers and full-throttle dried fruits. Full-bodied, with intense and very ripe fruit that has undertones of dried fruit, raisin and grilled meat. Chewy and decadent, almost rustic, offering so much richness and decadence.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 20/20 points.
