The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru bides its time unfolding in the glass, eventually revealing earthy red fruit, clove and hints of bergamot. This is very complex, but it is not a flashy Chambolle. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It has crisp acidity and is nicely structured with one of the most sapid finishes from the Domaine. This is one of their finest offerings in this vintage.
This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to push the underlying fruit to the background. By contrast the refined, intense and precise medium weight flavors possess that beguiling inner mouth perfume along with a pungent minerality, indeed the mouthfeel is akin to rolling tiny pebbles around the palate, all wrapped in a dusty, chalky, overtly austere and hugely long finale. This too could use better depth but that is almost certainly just a matter of letting time do its work.
A fine mid purple. The bouquet does rather stand out as one of the most complex of the range, perfectly poised between pure red and slightly darker fruit. Then a sweeter strawberry note. There is an excellent volume across the palate and good acidity to bring up the rear, a fine classy Cras with a good future.
