The 2016 Corton le Rognet Grand Cru, which as slightly more whole cluster than the other red grand crus from Mallard, has more opulence than the Marechaudes but perhaps not quite the same degree of finesse and mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe black fruit tinged with marmalade and licorice, bold in style but everything kept in check by the acidity. It feels very long on the finish, but I would like to see it evolve more grace.

A very interesting nose is also brooding and only reluctantly exhibits hints of the exotic that include sandalwood and mandarin orange along with more typical notes of essence of red currant, earth, spice and ample floral influence. There is a wonderfully sleek texture to the impressively-scaled flavors that possess first-rate mid-palate concentration while delivering excellent persistence on the bitter cherry-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. One to consider provided you have the patience to cellar it for at least 6 to 8 years first.
