Deze Saint-Émilion Grand Cru uit 2005, die voornamelijk uit Merlot bestaat, is afkomstig van Château La Gaffelière en bevat ook Cabernet Franc; een rode Bordeaux afkomstig van 22 hectare wijngaarden.
Hoewel het dat jaar warm weer was, zorgden de koele nachttemperaturen ervoor dat de zuurgraad behouden bleef, wat direct in het glas merkbaar is.
De rijping duurt tot 18 maanden in Franse eikenhouten vaten (waarvan de helft nieuw is). Stéphane Derenoncourt was van 2004 tot 2024 adviseur bij dit wijnhuis, dus de jaargang 2005 vertegenwoordigt zijn vroege werk daar.
Hij is nu perfect, hoewel hij baat heeft bij decanteren; hij kan het best worden gedronken tot en met 2030.

The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins.

This is a vivid and juicy wine with great depth and finesse. Full body, chewy and beautiful. Tight and complex. Still needs time but sexy and beautiful. Stone and chalk. Exciting.

A warm year, reflected in the generosity and velvety texture of the tannins, and the reflective deep garnet colour. Clear liquorice root, aromatics of tobacco, cigar, iris, with grilled loganberry and raspberry fruit. Plenty of life ahead of it, with excellent backbone of fresh acidities. As it opens tertiary notes of truffle, soy and broth appear, fully in its drinking window at 20 years, 3.55ph, 50% new oak for ageing.
