#65 in James Suckling's top 100 of 2024
A great example of a 2021 from a district of southern Napa that often produces the coolest, most supple cabernets. So dense yet silky and elegant. Graphite, iron, seashell and espresso aromas meet super-concentrated flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and cocoa, all wrapped in extra-fine tannins that structure it for long aging without being at all harsh to sip now. Fresh and balanced.
The 2021 Nathan Coombs Estate Christina's Signature is a new wine in this range created for distribution through La Place de Bordeaux. Black cherry, graphite, plum, espresso and licorice are beautifully amplified in this rich, brooding wine. Gravel, scorched earth, tobacco and incense play off the dark, sepia-toned fruit. Even with all its intensity, the 2021 possesses notable energy and brilliance. Then again, that is the allure of Coombsville.
All from the estate in Coombsville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cristina's Signature is based on 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Merlot raised in French oak. It shines for its incredible elegance and purity (which is classic 2021) and has terrific red, blue, and black fruits as well as notes of wild herbs, graphite, spicy oak, and subtle spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and perfect balance, it already offers pleasure today yet has another 15-20 years of prime drinking ahead of it.
A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Merlot. Grapes were hand-sorted and fermented with native yeasts. Maceration lasted 27 days, with pump-overs and délestage. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel. Aged 20 months in 50% new French oak. Bottled, unfined, and unfiltered. Profound iron stone mineral aromatics lift out of the glass, along with black cherry, plums, and rich cedarwood and dark chocolate notes. Medium-bodied with pronounced, structured tannins, juicy raspberry and plum fruits, herbs, and citrus peel. It has the quality of a beautifully composed claret that has the bones to cellar for the long term.
