Vincent Girardin has bottled the 2024 vintage of “Santenay-les-Vieilles Vignes,” made from old Chardonnay vines grown in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune. This “Villages” white wine was made from the harvest of that year, which proved to be a real challenge for winemakers throughout Burgundy. Mr. Girardin's methodology remains unchanged: hand-harvested grapes, the use of wild yeast, gentle pressing, and aging in 500-liter barrels with minimal use of new barrels to highlight the wine’s fruity character. You can expect a fresh wine rich in mineral notes, with hints of citrus and hazelnut characteristic of white wines from Santenay. It will be enjoyable until 2034.

Tasting Note

Initially, notes of lemon zest and white flowers emerge, followed by a chalky, almost stony edge that stands out more distinctly than the fruity aromas. On the palate, the 2024 vintage feels crisp rather than full-bodied, and its lively acidity brings out subtle hazelnut notes derived from lees aging. Its modest alcohol gives it a light, airy feel. The finish is dry and slightly salty. This Santenay white wine is built on a foundation of tension and can be enjoyed wonderfully even in its youth.

Grape Varieties

Chardonnay is grown as a single variety. Grown in Santenay's limestone soil, it is crisp with prominent citrus notes and is closer in style to the slender Chassagne than to the buttery Meursault. .

Cellaring Potential

Best enjoyed through 2034. Thanks to its lively acidity, it can be enjoyed for longer than most Santenay white wines. Serve at 10-13°C. Decanting is not necessary; simply open the bottle 20 minutes before drinking.

The Producer

A wine domaine and négociant: Vincent Girardin sits in Meursault with 33 hectares of its own vines in the Côte de Beaune, plus grapes from a network of growers who farm to the same rules. No herbicides or insecticides, hand-harvesting, low yields. Vincent Girardin himself came from a Santenay winemaking family and started at 19 with two hectares inherited from his parents. Éric Germain arrived as winemaker in 2002 and pushed the style towards precision rather than richness. When the business was sold in 2012 to Jean-Pierre Nié, the vines stayed with the Girardin family, so Germain, now managing director, rebuilt the holdings plot by plot. Today the range covers Santenay up to Aloxe-Corton, including Corton-Charlemagne, Bâtard-Montrachet and Le Montrachet. Natural yeasts, French oak, new wood used sparingly.

Terroir & Climate

Santenay is located at the southernmost tip of Côte de Beaune, past Chassagne-Montrachet, on the slopes of Mont des Sains, at an elevation of 220-500 meters. The soil is predominantly limestone, which is reflected in this wine's fresh citrus aromas and chalky finish rather than the buttery opulence found in Meursault. Of Santenay's 330 hectares, only about 15% is planted with white grape varieties, making this Chardonnay a rarity.

Winemaking

Vieilles vignes means old vines, and Vincent Girardin actively seeks out old vines by propagating the best ones through mass selection. Fermentation is carried out by natural yeasts present on the grapes. Aging takes place in French oak barrels alongside fine lees, and the use of new oak is minimized to ensure the distinctive flavors of the limestone terroir come through clearly. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted twice, and then lightly fined and filtered.

Food Pairing

Since acidity is a key element here, use it to balance out rich flavors. Sea bream served with a beurre blanc sauce. Chicken with a cream sauce, the classic Burgundian option. Risotto with leeks or mushrooms. For cheese, choose a hard, nutty variety like Comté or Beaufort. Fresh goat cheese also pairs well, as the citrus acidity cuts through the cheese's richness cleanly.
