Vincent Girardin's Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a white wine called Chardonnay made from grapes harvested from old vines in the village of Pernand-Vergelesses in the Côte de Beaune region. Old vines play a crucial role in this region. Because they have fewer leaves, in a year like 2023, the grapes were able to receive more sunlight. Toward the end of August, temperatures reached 38 °C and remained around 35 °C until September. These conditions were sufficient to cause sunscald on the old vines and concentrate the juice in the grapes remaining on the branches.

The 2023 growing season began early. Following a mild winter, budbreak began at the end of March, and flowering in the Côte d'Or began around the 29th of May, with temperatures rising to between 32 and 36 °C in July. Overall, Burgundy's was the warmest year on record. Spring rains caused the berries to swell, making green pruning (removing clusters to reduce yield) necessary in some plots.

As a result, the wine poured into the glass from the Pernand-Vergelesses vintage stands out for its richness. It exhibits a sense of maturity and opulence, with lower acidity than in cooler years, yet its refreshing character remains intact. It is best enjoyed between 2026 and 2034.
