In 2023, Burgundy enjoyed a warm summer, and by September, nighttime temperatures had dropped slightly, allowing for a bountiful harvest. For Vincent Girardin’s “Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vieilles Vignes” , the Chardonnay grapes were harvested at full ripeness while retaining good acidity. This is where the old vines played a key role. Unlike young vines, which tend to spread out, old vines naturally regulate their yield, send their roots deeper into the soil, and produce a more intense flavor. The 2023 vintage makes a fresher impression than the vintages of recent years, which were characterized by high temperatures, and the minerality characteristic of “Pernand-Vergelesses” will be clearly evident in the glass.
