Roux-Duval's 2020 Chassagne Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er cru is a dry white wine made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety, produced in the Premier Cru climat of the Côte de Beaune region. Morgeot is one of the larger Premier Cru areas in Chassagne-Montrachet, and Abbaye de Morgeot is a named vineyard located within it, the land where Cistercian monks first planted grapevines in the 12th century.
The year 2020 marked the third consecutive year of a hot, dry summer in the Burgundy region; prior to that, a mild and exceptionally rainy winter had helped maintain groundwater levels at a reasonably adequate level. The harvest began early (the earliest on record for most producers), with the Côte de Beaune region harvesting 7 to 10 days earlier than the northern villages. Due to high sugar levels, the alcohol content is slightly higher than in 2019.
This is immediately apparent in the glass. While this Chassagne is more full-bodied and ripe than it is crisp, it retains a stony, saline edge. It's worth taking the time to decant it for about an hour, and it's best enjoyed at 13-15°C rather than straight from the refrigerator. It will be at its best between 2026 and 2036.
