Mongeard-Mugneret
The present-day estate of Mongeard-Mugneret consists of 30 hectares of vineyards in 35 different appellations. The plots are located halfway up the slopes and are oriented to the southeast. Vineyards with this location and exposure are considered the best. The winery is located in the heart of Burgundy, in Vosne-Romanée. Wine has been produced here for more than 8 generations.
The winery was renamed Mongeard-Mugneret in 1945. This name can be traced back to Eugène Mongeard and Edmée Mugneret. Today, their grandson Vincent Mongeard is in charge of viticulture and vinification. Besides Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, there is also a small part of Aligoté, Gamay and Malbec planted. The showpieces of this house are the Vosne Romanée, Richebourg, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot. The age of the vines varies between 30 and 50 years. Due to this advanced age, the bunches produce well-concentrated grapes.
Tradition plays an important role in the working of the vineyard and in the vinification room. The bunches of grapes are harvested by hand and selected for quality in the cellar. It depends on the grapes and the year whether the Pinot Noir bunches are destemmed. This is not done with white wines. The village Chardonnay is aged in 300 liter French oak barrels. The regional Bourgogne Chardonnay is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. This wine has no wood influences.
All red wines are given a minimum period of wood ageing. For the grand cru wines, wooden barrels are used of 100% new wood. For the village and regional wines, barrels are used that are already 2 to 3 years old. Vincent also makes a very special red wine: a Malbec from Vosne Romanée. Vincent loves this grape variety and has therefore planted a small plot, as an experiment.
The portfolio is very extensive with entry-level wines to prestigious grand crus. This is how Mongeard-Mugneret is able to to win over a large group of enthusiasts!
