Marquis d'Angerville
In the village of Volnay, in the south of the Côte de Beaune, the Domaine Marquis d'Angerville has been a benchmark for quality for over a century. The estate holds the exclusive rights to the Clos des Ducs vineyard, one of the most famous vineyards in Volnay. Today, it is run by Guillaume d'Angerville, a sixth-generation member of the family, alongside his daughter Margaux, a seventh-generation member.
History
The history of the vineyards dates back to 1507, when these lands belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy. In 1804, Clos des Ducs was acquired by Baron du Menil. In 1888, Sem d’Angerville inherited the estate at the age of just 15 and devoted himself to its restoration. He replanted the vineyards following the phylloxera epidemic, starting in 1906, and in the 1920s became one of the first producers in Burgundy to bottle his wines on his own estate, this was a direct response to widespread fraud by négociants who blended and adulterated wines.
Jacques d’Angerville managed the estate from 1952 until his death in 2003. Guillaume, who had previously worked in banking, returned to take over the management that same year.
In 2009, he converted the estate to fully biodynamic farming.
Vineyards
The estate covers a total of 16.5 hectares, of which 11.5 hectares are classified as Volnay Premier Cru. Premier Cru plots include the exclusive Clos des Ducs and amongst others Fremiets, Taillepieds, Champans, Clos des Chênes, and Caillerets. There are also plots in Meursault Premier Cru and Pommard Premier Cru.
Grape varieties
All red wines are made from 100% Pinot Noir. The estate’s own Pinot d’Angerville clone produces small berries with a rich flavour and a high skin-to-juice ratio. Chardonnay is grown on the plots in Meursault.
Winemaking
The grapes are biodynamic viticulture-grown. A minimalist approach is taken in the cellar: meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard, careful work in the winery and as little intervention as possible.
The wines are aged in barrels for around 18 months, with malolactic fermentation taking place the following spring. Before bottling, the wines are transferred to tanks for blending and settling. Clarification and filtration are used only when absolutely necessary..
Wines
The range is built around the Volnay Premier Crus, with Clos des Ducs at the top. These are followed by Taillepieds, Clos des Chênes, Champans, Caillerets and Fremiets, each with its own character reflecting its location and the soils on the Volnay hillside. Volnay, Meursault Premier Cru, Pommard Premier Cru and Bourgogne Rouge complete the range.
