Échezeaux 2013, This is a red wine called Grand Cru, from the Côte de Nuits and produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti using Pinot Noir grapes grown in the company's own vineyard in Flagey-Échezeaux.
The harvest yield was low. According to the domaine's data, the 2013 Echezeaux yield totaled only 8,878 bottles, significantly below the typical yield for this plot. This was due to the weather conditions that season. A cold, rainy spring delayed and disrupted flowering, leading to a reduction in yield in the Côte d'Or plot even before the start of summer. Although July and August saw a stretch of warm, sunny days, ripening had been delayed, so most winegrowers waited until October to begin harvesting. In Domaine de la Romanee Conti, harvesting began at the start of October. Regarding this date, the winery has since explained that, by standards from 30 years ago, it was normal. Significant rainfall in October led to botrytis (gray mold), which appeared after most of the harvest was complete.
A late harvest in a cool year generally tends to result in lower alcohol content and higher acidity. This is precisely what defines the character of this wine.
