The 2019 growing season in Napa Valley began after a rainy winter and was followed by a long, mild summer. There were no sudden temperature changes, so ripening was not accelerated. For Detert Family Vineyards, which cultivates their East, West and South blocks within the To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, this meant that the Cabernet Sauvignon ripened slowly and smoothly. The 2019 vintage vividly demonstrates the rewards of patiently waiting to harvest in this region: flavors of dark fruit without heaviness, a structure without harshness, and the rich, distinctive character of Oakville that is expected from this area.

Tasting Note

Aromas of black currant and rich plum come to the forefront, while notes of cedar, sweet tobacco, and graphite linger in the background. Berries from the West Block give the wine the rich core characteristic of Oakville, while the tannins—refined rather than soft—lend the wine a firm structure. The finish is truly long. Although the wine is already a delight to drink now, after some time in the glass, we have no hesitation in recommending that it be cellared until the first half of the 2030s. The wine will remain at its best through 2036.

Grape Varieties

The wine is bottled as a single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are grown in the western and southern blocks of To Kalon and were planted relatively recently compared to the neighboring famous old Cabernet Franc vines. Well-drained alluvial sandy-gravel soil, deep-reaching roots, and the warm sunshine of Oakville. It is this combination that gives the wine maturity without heaviness, and that is why Detert produces this wine as a single-varietal rather than a blend.

Cellaring Potential

This wine can be enjoyed through 2036. The tannins are fine-grained yet abundant, and the acidity preserves the fruit’s freshness. After aging for about 3 to 5 years in a cool cellar (12–14 °C), the initial blackcurrant aromas will evolve into notes of cedar, tobacco, and leather. If opening now, let it breathe in a decanter for about an hour.

The Producer

The Detert family acquired 50 acres of land within the To Kalon Estate in 1954 and, for nearly 50 years thereafter, sold their harvest primarily to Robert Mondavi. Mondavi had been using those grapes in his own blends since 1966. Things changed in 2000, when Tom Garrett released the Detart family’s first Cabernet Franc. A Cabernet Sauvignon followed in 2002. We added this wine to our lineup because it is an extremely rare case where a producer owns a plot at To Kalon and bottles the wine independently. Production is very limited, and the majority is allocated to participants in the allocation program.

Terroir & Climate

The vineyard is located on a plateau in the heart of Oakville, on the eastern side of the Mayacamas Mountains. “To Kalon” is characterized by deep, gravel-rich alluvial soil with excellent drainage. As water flows downward and the roots follow, the vines effectively never stop growing. It is precisely this factor that gives Detert's wines their distinctive combination of supple texture and dense structure. Oakville’s daily temperature range—warmer by day than Yountville and cooler by night—allows the fruit to maintain optimal acidity levels until it reaches full ripeness.

Winemaking

Before devoting himself to Detert, Tom Garrett trained at Turley, Joseph Phelps, and Robert Mondavi. His style embodies the distinctive characteristics of Napa—ripe fruit flavors and a rich, medium body—while toning down the “processed” quality often found in many Oakville Cabernets. The wines are carefully crafted but not overworked. This is partly due to the small production volume. When production is limited to just a few hundred cases, he can pay close attention to each individual barrel and blend based on taste rather than a set formula.

Food Pairing

Cabernet’s tannins call rich flavored meals. A classic pairing is grilled ribeye, seasoned only with salt and pepper and cooked to “medium-rare.” A rack of lamb with rosemary pairs just as well. If you’d like to try something a little out of the ordinary, try braised short ribs or a portobello mushroom steak with aged hard cheese. Serve at 16–18 °C, decanting the wine an hour before serving.
