Wines from Vall Llach

Vall Llach

Cellar Vall Llach was founded in the 1990s by the two gentlemen Enric Costa and Lluís Llach. Before then, Enric worked as a notary and Lluís was Catalunya's most famous chansonnier. They chose a beautiful site in the Spanish Porrera in Priorat. 1998 is their first vintage and appeared on the market two years later.

The so-called trossos (small plots) are planted with grenache and carignan. The vines are very old and have an age of 90 to 110 years. For this reason, yields per hectare are very low, but this ensures high-quality grapes. In addition to these old vineyards, Vall Llach has recently planted cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and viognier. Together, the plots have a total area of 65 hectares. They do not use the entire yield themselves, so some of it is sold. Priorat is known for its steep slopes and typical Llicorella soil. This soil type is relatively poor and consists of weathered shale and quartz. This, among other things, gives the wines their distinctive Priorat character.

At Vall Llach, they consider it important that the wines reflect the region and local wine production. Eight different cuvées are produced, of which Mas de la Rosa Gran Vinya Classificada is the absolute best. The bunches are fermented in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. The wines are then raised in French oak barrels. The duration of the wood ageing is between 14 and 16 months. The wines are authentic and a good example of what Prioriat has to offer. As an enthusiast, you have to be quick, as Vall Llach produces only 100,000 bottles annually.

Vall Llach's best vintages are: 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2019.
