Soldera's 1984 Brunello di Montalcino is almost shockingly good. Incredibly vivid from the first taste, the 1984 only improves with air, as it becomes fresher and even more nuanced. Sweet tobacco, dark cherry, licorice, smoke, leather and herbs are all suggestive of a Brunello that is fully mature, and yet the 1984 seems to find an extra register of nuance and vibrancy as it continues to open up in the glass. For pure pleasure, the 1984 is one of the most enjoyable (and surprising!) wines in this tasting. I can't recall such a fine showing from the 1984. Tasted 2016.
