The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole always stands out in the estate portfolio and as the decisively cool-climate Sangiovese. However, those distinguishing characteristics are less evident in this hot vintage. The wine opens to a medium-dark garnet color and more fruity concentration than we've seen in recent releases. The bouquet reveals brambly fruit, forest floor, pencil shaving and a slightly sharper note of chard or dark olive tapenade. There is a rougher quality to the tannins that could indicate that the fruit was picked according to sugar ripeness, assuming a longer gap to phenolic ripeness in this vintage. I'd suggest giving the wine extra time to open once poured.
Chewy and rich with attractive cherry and dried-strawberry character, as well as intense tannins. Dried flowers, too. This is traditional and structured.
