Jancis Robinson (17.50)

Mid to deep ruby with a very narrow orange rim. Captivating and almost rich nose promising lots of extract, but much more closed than the 1985. Concentrated, sweet attack followed by powerful, quite demanding tannin. Integrated acidity, although not playing second fiddle by any means. Seems richer and yet more compact than the preceding 1985, and still needs more age.

Vinous (92)

The 1988 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a classic, old-school wine from a highly regarded growing season marked by a warm, dry summer and strong diurnal shifts during the final phase of ripening. Sweet macerated cherry, tobacco, cedar, earthiness are all laced together in this decidedly mid-weight, super-classic edition of Il Poggio. There is a touch of brett, but not enough to be too distracting in a wine at this stage of its life. I admire the wine’s freshness for its age. Tasted 2022.
