Here is another historic wine from Prunotto, only this time it comes from one of the most recognized crus in Barolo. It represents an ample production of 25,000 bottles per year. The 2019 Barolo Bussia has an interesting bouquet with clear tones of blue flower, fruit and rusty mineral. These are the basic building blocks of Nebbiolo, and this wine presents them as distinct elements. A few more years of bottle age will help this wine reach better integration. Like most of these wines from Prunotto, the Bussia shows an easygoing personality for near and medium-term drinking.
Flowers and dried strawberries with hints of sandalwood and rosewood. Plenty of flowers. Medium body. Very fine and firm tannins. Crunchy and bright. Drinkable but better in three or four years.
Monforte d’Alba. Just mid ruby. Rather closed on the nose and conveying very little at the moment. The palate is still closed but pure and with finely ground, clinging tannins. The whole is sensationally well balanced. Elegance rather than power.
The 2019 Barolo Bussia is a wine of precision, energy and understated structure. A whole range of balsamic notes open first. Layered and dynamic on the palate, with terrific depth, the 2019 sizzles with energy that carries through to the mid-palate and finish. In this tasting, the Bussia is wonderfully vivid right out of the gate.
