Robert Parker (95)

Sourced from 100-year-old vines in the sandy lieux-dits of Charbonnières (est), Mourre de Gaud and Pignan, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de Pierre is less effusive on the nose than the other cuvées at this address, yet it still remains marked by intense black cherries and licorice notes. Aged solely in concrete, it's full-bodied, velvety-textured and luscious, even if it does show a touch of alcoholic warmth on the lingering finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with the note above reflecting the better bottle.

Vinous (96)

Glistening ruby. An assertively perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, cherry compote, potpourri and exotic spices, and a smoky mineral flourish builds in the glass. Sweet, palate-staining red and dark berry liqueur, lavender and fruitcake flavors show outstanding depth as well as energy thanks to an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Blends power and finesse with a deft hand and finishes extremely long, sappy and pure, with polished tannins emerging slowly.

Jancis Robinson (16)

Cask sample. Tasted blind. Primary nose with red fruits and summer pudding dominating. A note of florality behind the wine and a sense of sweetness. Well-managed tannins – a clean finish. Perhaps not hugely complex but appealing.

Winespectator (96)

Densely packed yet silky and refined in feel, giving it an elegant, almost airy sense as the kirsch, cherry puree and damson plum notes sail through, with seamlessly inlaid black licorice, incense and black tea details. Features a nice mineral hint that lingers at the end, adding length and pulling you back for another sip. Best from 2023 through 2036.

James Suckling (93)

Lots of cherries, wild berries, dried herbs and stones on the nose follow through to a full body with firm tannins. Good freshness and vivacity on the palate with a succulent core of cherries and wild strawberries. Vivid and peppery finish with excellent length. 100% grenache. From organically grown grapes.
