Robert Parker (96)

From the highest plot of the Turmberg and the Gräfenberg (an old lieu-dit named Wasseros that Weil hasn't used for about 30 years) and at least 20-year-old vines rooting in phyllite slate, the 2023 Monte Nostrum Rheingau Riesling Trocken opens clear, precise and savory on the slightly flinty, very precise and coolish nose. Silky, juicy and with fine, crystalline acidity, this is a dense and intense yet pure and savory dry Riesling with a long, saline and stimulating finish. This excellent, very fine Riesling has a concentrated core of perfectly ripe fruit that is cut by laser-beam acidity. Excellent! It's a brand yet at the same time also a terroir wine from a defined origin (Wassreros). 9,000 bottles were filled in late July/early August. Entirely sold via Place de Bordeaux. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The essence of steep, high-altitude vineyard Rheingau dry riesling. Totally crystalline and precise, this is anything but big or loud, but is extremely pure and precise. Extremely delicate white peach, cloudberry and white flower aromas. Very stony, but every bit as graceful, the underplayed power first showing its hand in the extremely long finish, where there’s as much wet stone character as I can ever remember experiencing. From organically grown grapes. Drink from release.

The 2023 Riesling Monte Nostrum is a name borrowed from the Archbishops of Mainz, who referred to this elevated vineyard range as monte nostrum (“our mountain”) since the 12th century. This is made from the highest-elevation vineyards situated close to the forest. It was fermented spontaneously in large wood, with the goal of emphasizing precision and capturing the essence of these sites. Subtle citrus tones streak across the nose, along with some yeast. The palate is slender and vivid with lemon and streaks of pink grapefruit, alongside touches of juicy white peach. Zestiness defines the nose, palate and finish. Right now, fresh citrus triumphs, but this should turn into a sleek, bone-dry Riesling of immense energy and poise with its enlivening, energetic freshness. Wait for this. (Bone-dry)
