Le Yattarna 2024 est le vin blanc phare de Penfolds, un chardonnay élaboré à partir de raisins cultivés en Australie-Méridionale. Son nom, issu d’une langue des Premières Nations, signifie « petit à petit », « lentement ». Ce nom convient parfaitement à ce vin, qui a fait l’objet de pas moins de 144 essais d’élaboration avant que Penfolds n’approuve sa mise sur le marché.
Il a été commercialisé pour la première fois en 1998 sous le millésime 1995. La sélection est au cœur de ce vin. Seuls les raisins de Chardonnay jugés les meilleurs de la récolte de cette année-là, issue d’un climat frais, sont utilisés, et l’assemblage des origines varie au fur et à mesure que le style du vin évolue.
Le millésime 2024 a marqué le retour bienvenu d’un temps chaud et sec. En revanche, les régions aux températures plus basses ont connu une année plus difficile. Dans la région des Adelaide Hills, un début de saison frais et humide a entravé la floraison et réduit les rendements, mais le temps s’étant ensuite réchauffé et asséché, la saison s’est conclue comme l’une des plus belles récoltes de ces dernières années. Le gel et la grêle ont porté un coup dur à certaines parties de la Barossa et de la Clare Valley, et les rendements ont varié d’une partie à l’autre de la Barossa.
L’année 2024 a également marqué le 180e anniversaire de la fondation de Penfolds. À partir du 30 janvier, les vins phares de la maison, dont le Yattarna Chardonnay, ont commencé à être distribués en Europe par l’intermédiaire des négociants de La Place de Bordeaux.

The 2024 Yattarna Chardonnay is creamy, sleek and so polished. This is a brilliant wine. This and the Reserve Bin A usually duke it out for my favorite wines of the release each year, and in the end, I don't suppose it matters too much which wins. The Yattarna is stylistically typified by streamlined composure, length and compact complexity, while the Reserve Bin A is more flinty and more immediately seductive. I love them both. Anyway, both of these wines in this year's release look fantastic.

The quality and prestige of this renowned bottling jumps from the glass, balancing deep unctuous aromas of grilled lemon, orchard fruits and citrus blossom intertwined with a reductive salty edge of wet stone, flint and cashew. The palate is packed with flavor and complexity that is almost overwhelming until the salivating acidity cuts right through, leaving a tense and flamboyant finish. Grand cru quality, drinking wonderfully now with plenty of time to unravel in the cellar. Made from fruit grown in Tumbarumba, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Drink or hold.

A stunner of a vintage for Penfolds' top Chardonnay! Immediately intriguing with its savoury and mineral nose; think briny salinity, struck flint and slate, but with hints of brioche, macadamia and blossom too. Such depth to the palate, which has a taut mineral core, elegantly layered with oyster shell, green olive and creamy golden citrus; framed by precise acidity and with incredible persistence.

Elegant, fine, reductive bouquet with gunflint, white citrus fruit, mandarin, toast and a touch of oyster shell in the background. Good density, juicy, with fine grip, elegant richness and fine acidity. Delicate white fruit, honeydew melon, papaya, lemongrass and a touch of grapefruit on the finish. Long.

Stands head and shoulders above so many in the lineup, delivering grip, lift and joy. Slowly stretches out through the palate, gunsmoke, preserved lemons, elderflowers, white pear, delicious, full of impact and personality, skilful winemaking teasing out a ton of character.
