2024 was a challenging year for white Burgundy wines in the Côte de Beaune. Spring was cool and rainy, which not only increased the risk of downy mildew but also required continuous work in the vineyards throughout the growing season. Vincent Girardin's “Saint-Aubain-la-Chatenière” is made from grapes harvested on one of the most highly regarded Premier Cru plots in this appellation, which lies quietly in a side valley between Chassagne and Puligny; this year’s wine is characterized more by refinement than by power. Even among the Saint-Aubin wines from this plot, one can expect a more restrained Chardonnay with high-toned notes. It features a bright citrus aroma, chalky minerality, and a firm structure. La Châtenière is situated on stony limestone soil, and in the 2024 vintage, the wine’s maturity does not overwhelm this minerality but, on the contrary, highlights it. Best enjoyed between 2026 and 2044.
