Chateau des Tours Cotes du Rhone reserve Rouge 2022 Rayas

Harvested from very old vines, this Côtes-du-Rhône red wine was bottled by Rayas, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate whose reputation rests on Grenache and patience. The 2022 vintage experienced the hottest and driest growing season in the Rhône region since 1950, and many vines ceased growth due to the record-breaking heat of May. In such years, the importance of old roots becomes even more apparent.

Aging takes place in the cellars of Château Rayas and Château des Tours, using no new oak barrels at all and primarily large foudres (large wooden barrels) that are over 70 years old. This approach fully preserves the wine's red fruit aromas and savory notes, preventing oak flavors from overpowering them.

Expect aromas of raspberry and dried cherry, followed by dusty garrigue notes blending thyme and crushed stone. Old-vine Grenache offers aromatic complexity rather than weight. On the palate, the 2022 vintage is well-ripened yet not heavy; the alcohol level is moderate, the tannins provide a firm structure, and the finish leaves a lively, savory flavor rather than a sweet one. The 2022 Château des Tours Côtes du Rhône Réserve Rouge is already enjoyable to drink, though the tannins still have room to soften.

 It is best enjoyed through 2038. If opening a young bottle, decanting is recommended.
