Sonoma Mountain forms the backbone of the 2023 vintage Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard from Kistler; this full-bodied white wine is characterized more by its tension than by its weight. This single-vineyard bottling was produced in the McCrea block, planted on light volcanic soil known as white ash, with grapes grown in the Ahern vineyard, which is directly managed by the Kistler team.

The 2023 growing season was a slow one in the Sonoma County region. Record-breaking winter rains left the soil thoroughly saturated, delaying budbreak by as much as a month; the flowering period was marked by cool, foggy weather, and the harvest came in two weeks to a month later than usual across the California region. In September, while sugar levels plateaued, the skins and seeds continued to ripen, allowing growers to harvest fruit that tasted fully ripe despite a low potential alcohol content.

This suits this wine well. Winemaker Jason Kesner already harvests earlier than Kistler used to, and the 2023 McCrea exemplifies this well: it is a Chardonnay where the depth of phenolic compounds stands out more than body, and the acidity nicely balances the fruit flavors. The flavor is concentrated without any greasiness. This wine is one of 12 single-vineyard Chardonnays Kistler bottles, and the differences between them stem from the characteristics of the vineyards rather than the winemaking process.
