Barolo Albe 2022 is a red Barolo DOCG from Nebbiolo, produced by G.D. Vajra from high-altitude vineyards located in Piemonte. G.D. Vajra owns vineyards totaling approximately 150 acres, most of which are concentrated around the village of Barolo.
2022 was a hot and dry year. The vines were at risk of stunted growth due to Root Hypoxia (when the roots are unable to receive enough oxygen through the root system which prevents the roots from absorbing water and essential minerals) as early as June, and the grapes used for this wine were harvested during the second half of the Nebbiolo harvest. Altitude is crucial in such years, as high-altitude vineyards retain their freshness even during periods of high temperatures.
Fermentation takes place in custom-made vertical tini tanks, followed by gentle punch-downs and cap rinsing, with an average maceration period of 25 days. The following spring, malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 26 months of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels with capacities of 4,000, 5,000, and 7,500 liters. Because large-capacity oak barrels are used, the oak aroma is subtly infused.
Vibrant notes of cherry and rose blend with savory herbal aromas. On the palate, the wine offers a juicy, concentrated flavor, enveloped by fine, subtle, gravel-like tannins that create a long finish. While already enjoyable now, it possesses a robust structure. It is best enjoyed between 2025 and 2040; if opening a young bottle, it is recommended to decant it for at least an hour.
This winery has been family-run since 1968, when Aldo Vaira, at the age of 15, took over the management of the family-owned vineyard.

The super-versatile and charming G.D. Vajra 2022 Barolo Albe mirrors the personality of a hot, dry vintage that delivers concentrated Nebbiolo flavors of blackcurrant, cherry and rose. The Albe bottling takes its name from the sunrises visible from the high-elevation vineyards used for this blend, with fruit sourced from several sites across Barolo to capture balance and complexity even in warmer years. There are earthy aromas as well and a hint of sweet orange. Darkly ripened fruit leads to solid tannins and rich concentration with enough stuffing to make this a great Barolo for near- or medium-term drinking.

Precise and clear on the nose, it displays notes of delicate flowers that blend beautifully with cherries, rosemary, eucalyptus, and hibiscus. Numerous nuances of lemon and lime enliven the secondary aromas. Medium body, soft, well-extracted and refined tannins, and a juicy, highly drinkable finish.
