Echezeaux 2020 Domaine de la Romanee Conti

Echezeaux 2020 is a red wine from the Échezeaux vineyard in Flagey-Échezeaux of Côte de Nuits and produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In most years, this is the second-most-produced red wine at this domaine, following only La Tâche.

The 2020 growing season showed signs of an early start from the very beginning. Budbreak began on the 20th of March, the middle of the flowering period coincided with approximately the end of May, and the growth cycle maintained this early pace until the very end. The summer was hot and dry, with precipitation amounting to only about half of the seasonal average; however, a week-long heat wave caused sugar levels to rise rapidly. Rain on the 28th of August and another rain shower on the morning of the 30th softened the fruit skin, but the balance between sugar content and acidity remained intact.

Harvesting of the old vines began at the end of August, three weeks earlier than in 2019, making it one of the earliest harvests on record in Burgundy.

Although the phenomenon known as mille-grains (small, seedless berries) reduced the yield during the flowering period, it contributed to the concentration of the remaining fruit. Nevertheless, yields were good, and the majority of the domaine's wines exceeded the average for the years 2010 through 2017. This was a long-awaited turnaround following the extremely poor harvest of 2019. Across the entire Côte de Nuits region, 2020 produced full-bodied, robust red wines.
