Tasting Note Dominus Napanook 2023

The aroma is dominated by notes of black currant and black cherry, against a backdrop of hints of cedar shavings, dried sage, and graphite. Merlot lends body to the mid-palate, while Cabernet Franc adds floral freshness with hints of violet and crushed herbs. The tannins are fine and noticeable but not harsh. The acidity is more pronounced than in recent vintages of Napanook, which makes the finish longer and deeper. You can drink the wine immediately, after letting it breathe in a decanter, or wait 3–4 years until the cedar aroma and fruity notes have fully blended together.

Grape Varieties

Here, Cabernet Sauvignon supports the wine’s structure, forming a framework of black currant and graphite notes. Merlot smooths out the mid-palate, softening the Cabernet’s natural harshness with notes of plum and a richer texture. Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic top notes: violet, pencil shavings, and the freshness of herbs. The success of this blend in Yountville stems from the fact that, thanks to the long and cool growing season of 2023, all three varieties ripened at their own pace, allowing for a harmonious balance in which the Cabernet does not dominate the other varieties.

Cellaring Potential

Best enjoyed between 2026 and 2036. The 2023 vintage is characterized by delicate tannins and vibrant acidity, which will allow the wine to age for 10 years in the bottle. It can be enjoyed earlier than the "Dominus Grand Vin," though its structure will gain even greater depth after several years of aging. Store in a dark place at a temperature of 12–14 °C, keeping the bottle horizontal. After 2030, the fruity aromas will give way to notes of cedar and tobacco.

About Christian Moueix

Christian Moueix, who heads the "Dominus" estate, has had a brilliant career in Bordeaux (Pétrus, Trotanoy), and it is precisely this experience that clearly reflects the style of this winery. Napanook is an historic vineyard planted in 1836 and acquired by John Daniel in 1946. In 1982, Moueix entered into a partnership agreement with Daniels’ daughters, and in 1995, he bought out their shares. The "Napanook" wine, first released in 1996, is a second label. This wine was included in the lineup because, at a price that is only a fraction of that of a grand vin, it allows one to appreciate the genuine winemaking craftsmanship in the Moueix style and the Napa terroir, which embodies the spirit of Bordeaux.

Terroir & Climate

Napanook is located in Yountville, at the southern tip of the Napa Valley, where the climate is relatively cool. The morning fog rising from San Pablo Bay slows the ripening of the fruit, but these are precisely the conditions needed to ensure that the Cabernet Sauvignon does not develop a cloying, jam-like sweetness, but instead reveals its full aroma. The vineyards cover an area of 44 hectares and are divided into 14 plots; they are situated on an alluvial fan descending from the Mayacamas mountain range and are characterized by gravelly, well-drained soils. This drainage capacity is of paramount importance. Not only does it create moderate stress for the vines, promoting flavor concentration, but it also plays a vital role in preserving the wine’s freshness in this region, where the grapes often overripen.

Winemaking

Moueix manages the Napanook winery using the same methods as its wineries on the right bank. The harvest is done by hand, the grapes are selected by individual plots, and fermentation takes place in concrete or stainless steel tanks, depending on the plot. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new barrels kept to a moderate level and never used in quantities that would overpower the fruit flavors. Since 2002, Dominus has stopped using Merlot in its “Grand Vin,” though it is still used in Napanook. It is precisely this decision that gives the wine its roundness and approachability compared to its more powerful “siblings.”

Food Pairing

This wine’s delicate tannins and vibrant acidity pair perfectly with protein-rich dishes featuring a light, crispy crust. Recommended pairings:

• A simple, lightly salted grilled ribeye steak, served with baked bone marrow
• Lamb breast with rosemary, served with a red wine sauce
• Duck breast cooked to medium-rare, with a blackberry reduction sauce
• To finish—aged Gruyère or young Comté

Serve at 16–18 °C. If you plan to drink the wine young, let it breathe in a decanter for an hour.
