Small berries with concentrated flavors: This is the perfect way to sum up California's 2020 harvest, and it aptly describes Beringer's Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, a Cabernet-led red wine in the Bordeaux style.

A cool and mild growing season, combined with the heatwave in August, brought forward the ripening period, so harvesting began 1-2 weeks earlier than usual across most of the state. In addition, growers experienced a dry winter with only about half the usual rainfall, followed by a warmer-than-average summer. As a result, yields were below average.

While 2020 is remembered for the turmoil caused by COVID as well as record-breaking wildfires, fewer than 20 of the 4,200 wineries in California reported severe damage.

All these factors combined result in a wine that, when poured into a glass, presents a Cabernet Sauvignon profile characterized by deep, concentrated fruit flavors rather than a lean, high-acidity style. Notes of blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar and vanilla from French oak aging are detectable. The Bordeaux blending varieties serve to complement rather than overwhelm the core of Cabernet. It is firm but not chewy.

Best enjoyed by 2030.
