Drought shaped the 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Beaulieu Vineyard, a dry red from Napa Valley in California, more than any single weather event did. Across the North Coast region, the harvest began earlier than usual, starting one to several weeks ahead of schedule. Although the grape clusters and berries grew smaller, reducing the yield, the skin-to-juice ratio increased. The more skin there is, the deeper the color and the richer the tannins, resulting in a more intense flavor per drop. Additionally, in Napa Valley, the late growing season remained mild, allowing the fruit to remain on the vines without becoming overripe.

That year, the vineyard crews had to undertake an unusual task. Since varieties that typically ripen several weeks apart all reached harvest maturity at the same time, they had to harvest different varieties side by side in some plots.

Beaulieu Vineyard's Napa Valley bottling exhibits the classic characteristics of Napa Cabernet, dark-fruited and firm rather than delicate. The rich fruit flavors provide excellent support. In drought years, such as this one, Cabernet tends to produce wines with a dense, compact flavor rather than an expansive one, and the 2021 vintage clearly demonstrates this characteristic.
