This Tignanello 2022 consist of 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. Produced by Antinori as a Tuscany IGT from the calcareous soils with tuff elements under the vines, which shows up in the glass as a fine mineral edge running alongside cherry fruit and a floral notes. Tannins are alreday smoothly integrated in the wine.
In 2022, good climatic conditions in the fall made a logical grape harvesting period: Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc came in around mid-September, Cabernet Sauvignon waited until the first week of October. Rain arrived at the end of the season.
Parcels ferments separately in truncated conical tanks. The ageing is just over 15 months in French and partly Hungarian oak barrels, mostly new.
The wine is already drinkable now with a decant of an hour or two. Best drinking period is between 2027 and 2051.

Rich and fruit-forward, the Marchesi Antinori 2022 Tignanello very much respects the vintage that tends to deliver more concentration and volume overall. It delivers extra fruit weight with a velvety, satiny feel over a generous mouthfeel. Tignanello offers blackcurrant and cherry, but there is a mineral note that keeps things focused. This is a beautiful expression of the vintage, with excellent work done to execute soft tannins, texture and length.

There’s extraordinary energy in this wine. It displays a dark nose of black cherries, bramble fruit, violets, forest, licorice, bark, carob and leather. Density and tension dominate the full-bodied palate, with firm, velvety tannins. It’s slightly austere in the finish at the moment, yet it’s crunchy and full of potential. Try from 2026.

The 2022 Tignanello is such an elegant, poised wine. Brisk acids cut through a core of red Sangiovese fruit. Crushed flowers, mint, cinnamon, rose petal and a kiss of French oak appear later, adding notable brightness. The 2022 is a decidedly mid-weight Tignanello, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. Tignanello saw rain episodes at the end of the season, like most properties, but steep, well-draining hillsides were a clear advantage. The blend is 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, essentially the classic proportions here.

Bright, elegant ruby red. An inviting and fragrant nose, with notes of rich cherries and strawberry mint, along with subtle hints of freshly baked rye bread, precious wood, and candle wax. Very polished on the palate with dark, juicy fruit; clear and precise in its development, with lovely juiciness and gripping structure; still somewhat austere on the finish—it can and will continue to age.

A slightly different breed than the ’21, the 2022 Antinori ‘Tignanello’ Red Wine really needs about an hour in the decanter to get going. I enjoyed this wine on five occasions while staying in Firenze and each time I noticed how the wine began to slowly evolve after an hour. It is even more heady and intense than the ’21, with a seamless texture and polished tannins that frame a gorgeous core of creme de violette, cassis, loamy soils and suggestions of sweet pipe tobacco on the palate. A total headturning bottling, make sure to give this a lot of air if enjoying in its heady youth.
