Smith makes two Syrahs, both leaning toward the cool climate, spicy, complex end of the spectrum. Coming from a site on the Sonoma Coast and only 50% destemmed, the 2018 Syrah DuMOL Estate Vineyard offers a meaty, smoky, dense bouquet of peppery dark fruits, bouquet garni, violets, and damp earth. Reminding me of a top Saint-Joseph, it's medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, beautiful purity, and a great finish. 200 cases were made.
This was easily the finest set of releases I have tasted from winemaker Andy Smith.
Dynamic and expressive, with impressively layered raspberry and huckleberry flavors that are laced with garrigue and peppered beef and build tension toward refined tannins.
Deep ruby-purple in color, the 2018 Syrah Estate Vineyard opens slowly to cassis and macerated blue fruits with touches of dried herbs and milk chocolate. The palate is surprisingly fresh and silky, its juicy fruits lifting ethereally from the palate on the long finish.
