Graves has a diverse terroir including gravel, sand, clay and limestone soils. The area also has a mild marine climate. The gravel helps with drainage, while the clay and limestone enhance the wines' balance and finesse.

Graves wine chateaux

Graves is renowned for producing excellent and versatile wines. Despite producing primarily red wines, its white wines which are frequently matured in oak barrels, are also highly prized. Respected producers can be found in the area, especially in the Pessac-Léognan sub-appellation which was a part of Graves until 1987. Among the notable estates is Chateau Haut-Brion, this is a Premier Cru estate that regularly produces some of Bordeaux's best wines. Chateau La Louvière and Chateau de Chantegrive are two other important producers in Graves that provide great value and highlight the region's diversity. The quality and price of Graves wines are excellently balanced.
