The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is a classic blend of 75-80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre, but Sabon is increasing the Cinsault in the final blend. Aged completely in wood foudres and the triangular wood cuves called tronconique, it is a dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, powerful wine revealing sweet notes of kirsch, black currants, smoked herbs, underbrush and barbecue spices. A thick, rich, full-bodied, pure, long Chateauneuf with abundant tannin that is largely disguised by the concentration of fruit, it should drink well for 10-12+ years.
Powerfully rendered, with a large core of fig sauce, plum preserves and dark cassis notes that course along, pushed by anise and roasted apple wood flavors and a muscular, graphite-filled finish. Still quite densely packed on the finish, this needs time to stretch out.
