Glenglassaugh

The Glenglassaugh Distillery offers high-quality single malt whiskies much loved by whisky aficionados, such as the distillery’s core-range Glenglassaugh Torfa and the special range Glenglassaugh 51 Years Old Single Cask 3301. Despite the fact that this Highlands distillery has closed its doors on several occasions and remained dormant for decades, the Glenglassaugh Distillery transcended out of its ashes and continued its legacy to become one of the world’s most appreciated Scotch whiskies.

Established in 1875 by James Moir, the Glenglassaugh Distillery was commissioned to manufacture an undisputed high-quality single malt whisky, outshining its competing distilleries. The distillery was given the name of “Glenglassaugh” which is Gaelic for “Valley of the Glassaugh”, referring to the nearby Glassaugh Springs which provided the water for the spirit’s production. James Moir assigned co-ownership to his cousins William and Alexander Morrison, and the distillery thereafter established a good reputation. The demand for Glenglassaugh Single Malt increased, the production expanded and throughout the following years the distillery was renovated and provided with brand new equipment.

The Glenglassaugh Distillery was acquired by Highland Distillers in 1892, shortly after both James Moir and William Morrison passed away. Sadly, due to the economic recession of the early 20th century Highland Distillers shut down the distillery 1908, after less than two decades of ownership. Glenglassaugh remained dormant for almost half a century, until the distillery was reconstructed in 1957. Larger stills were installed to increase the distillery’s production capacity and in 1960 Glenglassaugh was re-opened and back on track.

However, like most distilleries Glenglassaugh was mothballed at the end of the 20th century due to the global whisky market saturation, leaving only the warehouses operational. Above all expectations, in 2007 a group of investors purchased the Glenglassaugh Distillery, established the company “Glenglassaugh Distillery Company Limited” and successfully restored Glenglassaugh back to its former glory! Finally, the Glenglassaugh Distillery was acquired by BenRiach Distillery Company in March 2013.

Glenglassaugh Single Malt Whisky is best defined by its savors of tea, caramel, citrus and nuts combined with herbal and “meaty” scents in the nose.
