This medium- to full-bodied, structured white has firm layers and almost savory aromas of ripe stone fruit, pomelo rind, tea leaves, tobacco, red apples and almond skin. Lots of bite and tannic tension that carries through to a long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg is restrained on the nose, yet reveals crushed sage, crushed pepper and a hint of white stone fruit. Creaminess and a supple texture soothe the yeast and pith on the concentrated palate. Freshness makes this mouthwatering and leaves a gorgeous spice of crushed fern and lemon on the finish. The wine shows the substance of the warm site but dazzles with freshness.
Lukas Pichler took a philosophical view of 2024. “Until autumn, everything was good. It was hot and dry, but we had more rain than in previous years. This meant slightly more peronospora [downy mildew] pressure, especially in the sites along the Danube.” Picking began in the first week of September, but heavy rain and flooding in mid-September brought everything to a halt for two weeks.
Light yellow green, silver reflections. Delicate notes of meadow herbs, white pomaceous fruit, a hint of grapefruit zest, orange touch. Complex, full-bodied, tight-knit, elegant, fresh apple, integrated acidity, salty with pronounced minerality on the finish, still needs time, will benefit from further bottle ageing.
