Uniting the depth of Forêt with the elegance and energy of Montmains, the 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux is one of the most complete and seamless premiers crus in Raveneau’s range. Based on similar clay-rich soils as Forêt but at a higher altitude, it’s sourced from 55-year-old vines that produce small, concentrated berries. It wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of grapefruit zest, wheat toast and acacia mingling with oyster shell. Layered and textural but with a tightly wound core, it’s structured around chalky extract and mouthwatering acidity, concluding with a long, saline finish.
The 2023 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru conveys a sense of completeness on the nose that draws you into its charms. Its yellow plum, crushed rock and sea cave aromas are as beautifully defined as ever. The palate is very harmonious with a fine bead of acidity, real depth and sapidity, building toward a long yet tender finish that lingers in the mouth. This was difficult to spit out…
Prominent mineral reduction nuances add breadth to the aromas of cool apple, pear, just grated zest and iodine and algae wisps. The richer and more concentrated larger-scaled flavors flash even more evident power on the markedly dry, sappy, balanced, tightly wound and quite serious finale. The Raveneau Butteaux is consistently the reference standard for the vineyard and it's likely to be so again in 2023.
Very faintly more colour than the Montmains. An extra density of white fruit on the nose. Excellent reserved power all the way through and the longest finish so far. The Butteaux delivers entirely in white fruit, without reduction, just harmony and a fine thread of minerals right at the finish. Not saline nor iodine, just a first rate expression of Butteaux.
