I also tasted the very young barrel sample of the 2021 Quiñón de Valmira, a year with stress and small berries with a very mild summer that resulted in a wine with great concentration and finesse, with a pH of 3.46 and six grams of acidity (higher than the average). The wine is still a baby (six months old!), but it feels quite balanced and is not oaky at all; it is harmonious, clean and quite expressive, even if it has lots of concentration and a big structure. This is a great vintage of Valmira in the making, super balanced, perhaps the finest ever? They expect to fill some 4,300 bottles around April 2023.

Such an expressive and attractive nose that opens up and talks to you directly, with tangy white pepper spices and Mezcal-like herbs. Agile and alluring, but harmonious, too. Pure raspberries, strawberries, fresh herbs, pomegranate and flowers. Elegant and soulful, full of juicy red berry flavors with a light yet quintessential, medium-bodied palate, rounded by chalky, minerally-textured tannins. Long, linear and full of energy and clarity. Ethereal and weightless. Already delicious, but will hold very well, too. Exciting drinkability.

85% Garnacha. Aged 12 months in foudre.
Pale purple colour. Raspberry coulis, wonderful lifted scent. Pepper and red bell pepper on the nose – that's a flavour I can't remember tasting before, and it gives distinctive personality to the wine. Full body with high acid. Elegant in a fuller-bodied mould. (RH)

Vinous (97)

The 2021 Quiñón De Valmira is a single-vineyard wine composed of 85% Garnacha and 15% other red varieties. Situated at 615 meters above sea level on the edge of the native forest, the Quiñón De Valmira vineyard, located in Monte Yerga, Rioja Oriental, stands out as one of the most esteemed in the region. The 2021 vintage was carefully aged for 12 months in foudres to preserve its integrity and prevent oxidation. Exhibiting a purple hue, the wine's reductive and subtly herbal nose reveals hints of Worcestershire sauce, complemented by balsamic and garrigue-like notes. On the palate, it delivers a dry and chalky texture with a taut and refreshing core, culminating in a cleansing, complex finish. Nimble and silky, this is a delicate and precise expression of Rioja Garnacha, masterfully interpreted by Alvaro Palacios.
