Aurélien Lurquin’s 2020 Pinot Noir Les Forcières, matured for a full two years in 228-liter oak barrels—approximately 10% of which were new—and disgorged without dosage in September 2024, is showing superbly. Sourced from Pinot Noir vines planted in 1987 and 1989, in a 0.75-hectare parcel located barely 200 meters from Les Traverses, this site, Lurquin notes, is particularly susceptible to drought stress and sunburn, consistently yielding a meager crop—even by his standards. In 2020, it appears to have produced his most concentrated and multifaceted wine. The bouquet opens with evocative aromas of pear, orange zest, beeswax and dried white flowers, framed by a touch of youthful reduction. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, ample and layered, with a vinous core of fruit and a textural attack leading into a deep and concentrated mid-palate with a low-pressure mousse and a long, mineral finish. Only half of the fruit from this parcel is reserved for Champagne; the remainder is vinified as red Coteaux Champenois.
