The 2018 growing season in the Uco Valley was warm but balanced, with dry summers and cool nights at high altitude preserving acidity until harvest. For Zuccardi's Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2018 wine, grapes from sites with the highest concentration of calcium carbonate in the soil were used. The result is a malbec that has more tension than weight. We can expect a linear, mineral expression of Paraje Altamira, less ripe than the 2017.
There is a strong iron note in the 2018 Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal, a Malbec from a small plot within Piedra Infinita, usually the first plot to be harvested within Piedra Infinita. It's an extreme plot, very shallow and with pure stone and a strong character. They found this plot in search for "cal," pure limestone, so they want a strong sensation of chalk in the wine here. This is austere, and I think it's more precise than in previous vintages. Only 1,000 bottles were filled in August 2019.
Rich, exotic aromas of rich berries and peaches with some flowers and hints of walnuts, following through to a full body with firm tannins and a juicy finish. Pretty, fine and dusty tannins. Juicy finish. Delicious now or hold.
First impressions. Tension. The 2018 Supercal leads with salty, almost chalky notes of lime soil, opening up with violets, red plums and blackberries. The flavor is dense and linear, without oak sheen (Zuccardi ages this wine in concrete), with fine-grained tannins and a long mineral finish. This is not a plump malbec. If you open the bottle now, decant it within an hour or cellar it for a little longer.
Supercal is 100% Malbec harvested from a single plot at Finca Piedra Infinita. Why not blend it? Because what matters here is the soil. Sebastian Zuccardi chose this plot because of its calcium carbonate content. At 1,100 meters above sea level, the malbec is grown on limestone, which gives it floral aromas, red fruits and a salty touch.
Keep this wine until at least 2026, with a drinking period extending to 2040 and possibly beyond; the fine tannins and bright acidity of the 2018 vintage will underpin its long aging; store at 12-14°C. Expect the mineral notes to soften over time and tertiary notes (leather, dried herbs) to emerge.
