Robert Parker (91)

One of the undisputed success stories of the 1996 vintage in Alsace is Pinot Gris, but only for those who waited until October to harvest. Olivier Humbrecht told me the 1996 Pinot Gris wines are even richer than his 1995s. This wine is an enormously endowed, relatively sweet, unctuously-textured wine with fabulous purity and length. Viscous, it could be drunk with a spoon, and, for that reason, is best served alongside decadently fat foie gras, a killer combination ... literally!

Richly textured and sugar-tinged, this showcases the opulent side of '96 Pinot Gris. The peach, butterscotch and cinnamon flavors are supported by solid acidity, and the finish is almost dry.
