Sauzet's Corton-Charlemagne 2024 is a white Grand Cru harvested from the Corton hill in Côte de Beaune; it is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
The vineyards of Corton suffered in 2024. Precipitation in Burgundy exceeded the long-term average by more than 55 percent, while sunshine hours were approximately 10 percent below the long-term average. Furthermore, the weather station in Pernand-Vergelesses recorded 1,031 mm of precipitation from January through September, while the average was 531 mm.
What saved the harvest here were the drainage system and good timing. The soil in Mid-slope Grand Cru drained water quickly, and flowering occurred earlier during a period of more favorable conditions, allowing young fruit to remain on the vines. Two weeks of warm, dry weather at the beginning of August accelerated fruit ripening. Harvesting began around the 12th of September, and most grape growers had finished around two weeks later. Although the Chardonnay vintage saw a 10-20 percent loss in yield in the Côte de Beaune region, the results are considered favorable for 2024.
Expect a strict, linear style rather than a broad, expansive one, one that retains the stony sharpness characteristic of Corton-Charlemagne. Many winemakers this year have used less new oak, which is well-suited to this style of wine.
Serve at 12-14°C. Best enjoyed between 2030 and 2044.
