Méo-Camuzet's Vosne-Romanée 2023 is a Red Village wine produced in the Côte de Nuits; as always, it was made by blending grapes from two plots just before bottling. These are Les Barreaux, located on a mid-slope facing northeast, and les Communes, an old vineyard planted in the late 1950s. Pinot Noir, with approximately 50% new oak.
2023 was a challenging year in the Vosne-Romanée region. Cool weather and rain set in midway through the growing season, the crop load was heavy, and veraison (the point where grapes change colour and start ripening) dragged out. This was followed by a heatwave. One grower reported that temperatures of 42°C followed almost immediately after 100 mm of rain. Yields were high, pH levels were low, and some bunches suffered from sunburn toward the end of the season.
As a result, the bottled wine exhibits far more intriguing characteristics than the climatic conditions of that year might suggest. Les Barreaux practices late harvesting and intentionally maintains low yields; in a year like this, such meticulous management is even more critical than usual. Thanks to the freshness this vineyard offers, the 2023 vintage is a beautiful wine.
It is best enjoyed through 2036.
