In 2023, thanks to a warm summer and timely rains, winemakers in Chablis harvested a bountiful crop. The wine “Vau de Vey La Grande Chaume 1er cru” by Jeremy Arnaud is made from grapes grown on the steep, cool slopes of the left bank of the Serein River, and this vintage perfectly reflects the characteristics of this terroir. The wine features fruity notes of ripe Chardonnay, while the clay soil of the Kimmeridgian Formation lends the acidity clarity and restraint. This 2023 vintage will remain delightful until 2038. The wine’s flavor is expected to become rounder and more approachable over time, without losing the flinty and citrusy aromas characteristic of this cru.
The 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Vau De Vey La Grande Chaume reveals aromas of orange oil, pear and freshly baked bread, complemented by notes of almond paste, sandalwood and dried flowers. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, ample and textural, with a sweet, concentrated core, concluding with a long, persistent finish. The wine derives from a steep, southeast-facing lieu-dit planted between 1980 and 1985 and, like the rest of Arnaud’s 2023s, was matured for its first year in barrels before completing élevage in stainless steel tank.
