Georges Lignier
Domaine Georges Lignier is a domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis which was established in the beginning of the 20th century, although the Lignier family has been wine growers since the 1850’s.
Georges is a cousin to Hubert Lignier and they both own comparable and magnificent vineyards. Since 2008 Benoît Stehly ,the nephew of Georges, is in charge of the property. The style of wine making is described as traditional with delicate and seductive nuances, but with a great potential to mature. The use of new oak is limited: Premier cru wines will benefit from about 30 percent new oak, and for the grand cru wines, it’s about 50 percent. The last seven or so years (from 2010), the wines have been bottled without fining or filtration.
The domaine’s majestic vineyard portfolio includes almost 1.5 Ha of Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru (The domaine is the largest owner within this grand cru), 1.05 Ha of Clos de la Roche Grand Cru and 0.29 Ha of Bonnes Mares Grand Cru. Furthermore, there are vineyard holdings in Charmes-Chambertin (Grand Cru), Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Les Combottes” and Morey-St.-Denis 1er Cru “Clos des Ormes”. Domaine Georges Lignier owns a total of 16 Ha of vineyards in 17 different appellations.
Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are used, depending on the specific vineyard. The average age of the vines is over 50 years. Truly a “grand domaine” in Burgundy with a remarkable consistency and competitive prices in their whole line-up.
