Chateau L'Evangile

Château L’Évangile is a well-known estate situated in the appellation Pomerol on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux area. The property was founded by the Léglise family from Libourne in the middle of the 18th century and it first appeared in 1741 in a land registry under the name of “Fazilleau”.

The Léglise family was very active in creating the several vineyards in the Pomerol area and the estate became one of Pomerol’s first vineyards. At the turn of the 19th century, the estate was sold to a lawyer named Isambert and he renamed it L’Évangile. In 1862, L’Évangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon and he was responsible for the construction of the residence in the style of the Second Empire.

His descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the property’s owners until 1990. In 1956, the severe frost damaged most of the vineyard and it had to be replanted. In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), acquired the property from the Ducasse family and they improved the quality of the wine even more. At present, château L’Évangile comprises 22 Ha of vineyard, made up of sandy clay soil with pure gravel. The grape varieties consist of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%) and the grapes are harvested by hand.

Château L’Évangile is aged in partly new French oak for 18 months before release. They also produce a second wine named “Blason de L’Évangile” from the grapes which do not meet standards for the “Grand Vin”. The average production of Château L’Évangile and Blason de L’Évangile is around 5000 cases.

Top vintages for Château L’Évangile are: 1947, 1950, 1961, 1966, 1975, 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.
