Beringer's Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 2017 is the St. Helena winery's flagship red wine, a full-bodied Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon made from the winery's carefully selected, premium grapes. Selection is the core philosophy of Private Reserve. Only the very best lots are included in this blend, while the rest is released under the Napa Valley label; the wine ultimately bottled is one with sufficient body and alcohol content to undergo extended aging in French oak barriques (small oak barrels).

The year 2017 began with abundant rainfall across the entire California region, ending a five-year drought; thanks to mild spring weather, the blossoms remained on the vines for an extended period, and there was virtually no fruit drop. However, a heat wave that struck in late August and early September caused the harvest to be brought forward sharply, resulting in a reduced yield. In mid-September, temperatures dropped again, slowing the harvest pace and allowing the red grapes to ripen more gradually. The harvest wrapped up early. By the time wildfires spread to the North Coast region in October, approximately 90% of the Napa harvest had already been delivered to the winery.
