Emidio Pepe is the legend of Abruzzo. In 1964, Emidio Pepe decided to establish his own winery. Those years before, he could be found in the cellar of Casa Pepe, his father and grandfather's winery. Emidio was one of the first to believe in the ageing potential of trebbiano and montepulciano. Not everyone understood that vision, but this provided all the more motivation and drive. In the end, he proved to everyone that it was a bold but highly successful choice. After years of hard work, Emidio stepped back and handed over the leadership to his daughters Sofia and Daniela.
The vineyards are a stone's throw from the Adriatic Sea. Here, the grapes enjoy favourable growing conditions. The breeze from the sea provides some cooling and even at night the temperature drops sufficiently, so that the acidity in the grapes is well preserved. Together, the vineyards have a total area of 14 hectares. Besides trebbiano d'Abruzzo and montepulciano, there is also pecorino planted. To maintain the natural balance in the vineyard, biodynamic practices are used.
Only the best bunches are used for production, so there is strict selection. The grapes for the white wines are foot-pressed in large wooden vats. The blue grapes are even crushed by hand. This method ensures that the bunches are not handled harshly and that any unwanted aromas do not get into the wine. After fermentation in cement vats, Emidio's famous ageing process starts. The white wines are released on the market after an average of five years. The ageing time for Montepulciano d'Aburzzo can be up to 20 years. Stored bottles are released only when the family is convinced that the vintage in question is showing its best face. These vintages are then perfectly ready to drink. In addition, a small quantity of the recent vintage is released each year. Bottles older than 20 years are decanted by hand one by one and bottled in a new bottle. At the same time, the quality is checked. So you can be assured that there are no flaws in the wine.
Emidio Pepe's wines are very unique with a style all their own. Worldwide, the winery has many fans and its wines are highly renowned.
