Tightly wound and compact, this is a very exciting dry Mosel riesling that deftly intertwines warm and cool elements. Stacks of red vineyard peach fruit and an intense spiciness give this a lot of immediate appeal, but the stony structure is still a bit dominant and needs more bottle age to fully resolve. Excellent aging potential. From vines planted in 1896. Vegan.
The 2022 Riesling Longuicher Maximin Herrenberg 1896 Alte Reben is from a 0.8-hectare parcel of own-rooted vines planted in 1896 on red slate. This is seen as the treasure of the estate. An almost creamy note accompanies the savory apple and peach on the nose. The palate continues with a most enticing creaminess, seeming to soak up all the spice, boldness and concentration and render it into much elegance. This is helped along with slight nuttiness from well-situated newer oak. This is dryer than its siblings at 5.4g/L of sweetness and is a bundled pack of energy, bold but refined. The finish is of lemony nuttiness. (Dry)
The vines, now almost 130 years old, the gentle pressing and aging in old wooden barrels result in a wine that shines on the nose with quiet elegance. The palate becomes far more expressive, enormously juicy, almost fine-grained, deep and very long. One of its kind.
