Its standing as one of Burgundy's most esteemed vineyards, producing only red wines from Pinot Noir. It is located on around 40 hectares of excellent viticultural land in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux. Echezeaux only produces red wines which are renowned for their full-bodied nature.
Echezeaux lies on the Cote d'Or, just south of Vosne-Romanee, spanning from clay-rich valley soils to lighter, gravelly slopes. It is bordered by Clos de Vougeot and Grands-Echezeaux to the north and premier cru vineyards like Richebourg to the south. Its east-facing slopes maximize sunlight.

The terroir of Echezeaux wines
The rich and diverse terroir of the Echezeaux vineyards has a direct impact on the quality of the wines produced there. The slopes range in elevation from 230 to more than 300 meters. The slopes are distinguished by a varied mixture of soils such as pebbly marl, Bajocien limestone and alluvial deposis. These soils offer the best drainage and growing conditions for Pinot Noir. Although both climats yield wines with exceptional depth and character, neighbouring Grands-Echezeaux with its more uniform clay-limestone soil frequently receives greater praise because of its uniform terroir.

Famous producers of Echezeaux wines
The richness and structure of Echezeaux wines are highly praised. Despite minor variances in quality across the climat producers such as Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC), Mongeard-Mugneret, and Emmanuel Rouget contribute to Echezeaux's global reputation. DRC in particular cultivates roughly five hectares, yielding some of the appellation's most desirable wines.
