The history of Clos-Saint-Denis
Clos Saint-Denis's history began in the eleventh century. This is when the Collégiale de Saint-Denis de Vergy (a religious order) founded it. The vineyard's name honours Saint Denis whose legacy led the Morey commune to be renamed Morey-Saint-Denis in 1927. Because of the close ties between the region's wines and its soil it was popular in Burgundy to add prominent vineyard names to village names. It's interesting to note that although the word "clos" implies a walled vineyard, historical documents imply that Clos Saint-Denis may never have had a wall around it.

The terroir of Clos-Saint-Denis
Clos Saint-Denis' terroir is a well-balanced combination of climate and geology. The rough clayey soil which is mostly limestone from the mid-Jurassic period offers good nutrients and drainage. A small top layer of red clay enhances the vineyard's character, providing slightly greater water retention than nearby vineyards like Clos de la Roche. The vineyard which is located on the mid-slope of the Cote d'Or escarpment, enjoys an easterly exposure. This protects the vines from the more severe westerly winds while letting them soak up the early sun. This unique combination of soil, slope and climate allows the grapes to reach full ripeness while keeping acidity.
The wines of Clos Saint-Denis are renowned for their grace, nuanced structure and rich aromas.
