The estate was referred to in early Abbey of Citeaux records as "Cloux des Lambrey," this is indicating that it had been established as a walled vineyard "Clos."
During the French Revolution the estate fragmented, but over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, visionary owners gradually put the vineyard back together. Clos des Lambrays' longstanding reputation for outstanding wine quality was acknowledged in 1981, this is when it was granted formal Grand Cru recognition.
